Macau Hongkong
The neighbouring enclave of Macau may now be best known for its multiple casinos, but a tour there is also an excursion to a Mediterranean town with historical and cultural flair. A 55-minute jetfoil boat ride across the South China Sea and the Pearl River estuary whisks visitors into Macau, located on the western side of the Pearl River Delta.
Under Portuguese sovereignty for four centuries until 1999, tiny Macau contains many UNESCO's World Heritage monuments, including the famous facade of St Paul's Church, the Mount Fortress and the 14th-century A-Ma Temple where the Portuguese traders first landed. There's also a much more modern side to the town, with soaring tower blocks and a casino business that is on a par with Las Vegas!
